First determine if the vehicle has Digital Sound Processing. If the vehicle is equipped with DSP, a different iPod install kit is required for installation. Be sure to state whether the vehicle has DSP or not when obtaining the installation materials for the iPod interface to get the correct kit.

The iPod interface cannot be installed and functional when a CD changer is installed in the vehicle. Only one can be functional at a time in the vehicle.

Some coding may be required on vehicles that are equipped with DSP.

The contents of the iPod interface kit are:

  • IPod interface module – Is used as an interface between the vehicles radio and the customer’s iPod device.
  • IPod interface module wrap – Is used to protect the interface module while installed in the vehicle.
  • IPod interface cable – This cable located in the glove box is used to connect the customer’s iPod to the iPod interface module.
  • Radio to iPod power cable – This cable supplies the power, ground and communication wires to the iPod interface module.
  • Rubber grommet – The grommet protects the iPod interface cable as it passes through the glove box on its way to the radio.
  • Owner’s manual – Provides directions to the operation of the iPod interface.

If a CD changer is previously installed, it will need to be disconnected prior to installation of the iPod interface. Failure to disconnect the CD changer will cause the iPod interface to be inoperative.

Steps prior to installation:

  • E83X3 – Remove the center air vents, IHKA with trim, Radio and Glove box
  • E53X5 – Remove the CD player, MID and Glove box
  • E85Z4 – Remove the Center air vents, Radio and Glove box
  • E395 Series – Remove the CD player, MID, Glove box and side trim panel inside glove box area.

After removing the glove box, a hole will need to be drilled in a certain location. The hole will need to be drilled where, when the cable comes through the glove box, no damage is caused to the interface cable or inhibits operation of the glove box.

  • E83 – A 5/8” diameter hole will need to be drilled in the glove box. The hole is drilled on the left side of the glove box at the upper back corner of the glove, 1” from the top of the glove box.
  • E53 – A 5/8” diameter hole will need to be drilled in the glove box. The hole will be drilled on the top left area of the glove box on the sloped area, 1” from the edge of the sloped portion.
  • E85 – A 5/8” diameter hole will need to be drilled in the upper right corner of the glove box. Where there is a small square section, drill the hole toward the front of the vehicle.
  • E39 – A 5/8” diameter hole will need to be drilled on the left side of the glove box towards the rear, 1” from the top of the glove box.

Begin by disconnecting the vehicle battery.

Access the radio connector previously removed. Remove the blue lock from the connector, a pocket screwdriver works well. Locate and remove pins 9, 12 and 15. The pins can be removed by releasing the tab with a small screwdriver or pick. The colors of the wires may vary from vehicles.

Wire colors:

  • Pin 9 White, Red, Yellow
  • Pin 12 Brown
  • Pin 15 Red, Green

Install the wires removed from the radio connector in the 4 pin connector provided with the install kit.

  • Install the Red/Green wire in location 2 of the 4 pin connector.
  • Install the White/Red/Yellow wire in location 3 of the 4 pin connector.
  • Install the Brown wire in location 4 of the 4 pin connector.

Now install the three wires from the iPod interface power cable in the radio connector.

  • Install the White/Gray/Yellow wire in pin 9 location in the radio connector.
  • Install the Brown wire in pin 12 location in the radio connector.
  • Install the Red/Green wire in pin 15 location in the radio connector.

Next remove the white 12 pin connector from the radio connector and tie it back to the harness. Install the white 12 pin connector from the iPod interface power cable in the same location in the radio connector. Reinstall the blue lock previously removed from the radio connector. Connect the two 4 pin male/female connectors together.

Put the wrap around the iPod interface module to protect the module while installed in the vehicle. Run the iPod interface cable through the glove box with the grommet, through to the area of the radio, making sure not to inhibit the operation of the stepper motors or linkage of the IHKA. Reinstall the glove box being sure to keep the interface cable routed correctly. Connect the iPod interface power cable and iPod interface cable from the glove box to the iPod interface module. The diagram on the iPod interface module shows where to connect each cable. Install the iPod interface module in an area that won’t interfere with the installation of the radio or other components. Reinstall the components previously remove prior to installation. Connect an iPod to the interface cable in the glove box and test the operation through the radio.
