Instrument Cluster Electronics


The Instrument cluster is an interface between the vehicle and operator. It displays information relating to diferent functions such as malfunctions, current operations and warnings. Various warning lamps, indicators and acoustical warnings are used to keep the operator informed on vehicle operations.

On-Board Computer

On-board Computer functions can be accessed through the Instrument cluster or CID.

The functions that are displayed are:

  • Outside temperature
  • Time
  • Ave. Speed
  • Range
  • Ave. MPG
  • Date

Either the Ave. Speed or Ave. MPG can be reset via the instrument cluster. By selecting either function and pressing and holding the BC button that value can be reset.

Instrument Cluster Inputs

  • Outside temp. sensor
  • Fuel level sensors
  • Coolant level sensors
  • Washer reservoir level sensor
  • Parking brake switch
  • BC button/turn signal switch
  • Trip meter reset button
  • DSC control unit: DSC Regulation, DSC faults, Brake pad warning, TPM information/warnings.
  • Active Cruise control: Display of icons for operation.
  • Active Steering: Lamp for fault indicator.
  • DME/DDE: Fault indicator with service engine soon lamp, information on oil condition for CBS data.
  • ACSM: Warning lamp for faults with SRS components.
  • Light Module(LM): Confirmation of active lamps by customer. - request(E60)
  • FRM: Confirmation of active lamps by customer. - request(E70)
  • EGS: Displays the transmission gear selected.
  • CAS: The instrument is used to store redundant data for the CAS control module, including current vehicle mileage, current CBS data and vehicle VIN information.

To access the instrument cluster test functions, the sum of the last five numbers of the VIN must be entered in test function #19.

Instrument Cluster Replacement

When it is necessary to replace the Instrument cluster and CAS control module at the same time, these directions must be followed: Replace and encode the Instrument cluster. Cycle the ignition to transfer the data. Replace and encode the CAS control module. Cycle the ignition once again and verify that the manipulation dot isnt present.

The Instrument cluster is respondsible for storing redundant data for the CAS control module including,
VIN number
Total vehicle mileage
CBS data

When replacing the instrument cluster, the manipulation dot will be displayed until it is encoded. After encoding, the manipulation dot should disappear.
