Round Diagnostic Connector

All BMW models up to 07/2000 use a round diagnostic connector under the hood. These round diagnostic connector have 20 pin positions and have a screw on cover.

On North America market vehicles from 1996 also have a standard OBD2 connector located in the cabin.
When a vehicle has both types of connectors the round diagnostic connector must be used.

Some models used the round diagnostic connector until the end of production. These models are:
E38 7-Series
E36 Z3

The BMW X5 (E53) used the round diagnostic connector until the 2002 model year on some versions.
